UFC 167: Johny Hendricks Calls Into Question GSP’s Wrestling Skills

Johny Hendricks is a proven wrestler, having earned two NCAA championships while competing for Oklahoma State University.

The four-time All-American will try to finally dethrone Georges St-Pierre atop the UFC’s welterweight division this Saturday night at UFC 167.

“Bigg Rigg” has won six consecutive bouts since a decision loss to Rick Story in 2010. He is 15-1 in his career, with wins over the likes of Carlos Condit, Martin Kampmann and Josh Koscheck.

St-Pierre, the long-time ruler of the UFC’s 170-pound division, has been called one of the best wrestlers in MMA. However, Hendricks doesn’t believe their styles of wrestling are similar.

“I don’t think he can go into the Oklahoma State wrestling room and win a match,” said Hendricks, during a recent appearance on UFC Tonight. “MMA wrestling is totally different. Guys are standing a lot taller and he has a long reach.

“Hopefully, I can squash that this Saturday.”

Hendricks isn’t viewed as a complete long-shot, but he knows the odds are not in his favor. That doesn’t bother him, though, one bit.

“I have the power to make people forget,” he said. “I have the wrestling. I’ve wrestled all my life. I went back to Oklahoma State to train for this fight.

“I have everything to beat GSP and I just can’t wait to prove it.”
