Although Rory MacDonald has repeatedly stated he’s not interested in fighting his friend Georges St. Pierre for the UFC Welterweight Championship, speculation and debate about the possibility hasn’t gone away. Of course, if the #3 ranked welterweight defeats Robbie Lawler tomorrow night, and St. Pierre defends his title versus Johny Hendricks, talk about the two fighting will reach a fever pitch.
In the past, UFC boss man Dana White has said MacDonald will change his mind when the time comes. Well, while speaking to the media this week in Las Vegas, White believes that day could be imminent (comments via MMA Junkie.com).
“I think if he beats Robbie Lawler, he’s going to move out of Georges’ (gym) and I think things are going to change,” White said. “I think this is the fight, right here for him, that’s going to put him in the direction of fighting Georges St-Pierre. I think if he wins this fight, he’s moving out – he’s going to get his own place.”
“And when that time comes for Rory, you know he’s (GSP) going to give him that opportunity. And you f—ing know Rory wants it. You know he wants it.”
MacDonald has also relayed in the past that he and GSP would explore their options, if and when the day arrived where he was next in line for a title shot. Since the only fighters ahead of MacDonald in the rankings currently are Hendricks and Carlos Condit, clearly the Tristar welterweight is zoning in on a title fight.
It’s also worth noting that GSP has said recently he’ll be making a big announcement soon, and since he’s been adamant he’s not retiring, what could it be? A move to another weight division? It could be a pretty memorable night tomorrow.
UFC 167 will be hosted by the MGM Grand Garden Arena in Las Vegas, Nevada. Stay tuned to Fightline.com for all your UFC news and coverage.
